Another FI-210 Class
And yet another FI-210 Wildland Fire Basic Origin and Cause Investigation course is in the books. It's my final one.
It was a great group of folks who showed for the training. Our burn window to put in the plots couldn't have been better and those "burning" folks all did a great job getting the plots ready for the class.
The class itself went very well. We only had one fellow who had to leave the training for personal reasons. Other than that all of the folks in attendance did a great job both on the book/classroom side AND on the field/interpretation side. Many thanks to Jared Eison and those fine folks at the Quinault Indian Nation for their outstanding support, once again. Here's some pics to enjoy...
Fires started by fireworks
Chatting with witnesses, getting information... or not.
...and figuring it out!
In all? It was a great class and a great way for me to close a career!
Thanks all for everything you did throughout a long, rewarding and challenging employment! Now I'm going to kick back and just try to keep on keepin' on until the next round.
STAY SAFE, ALWAYS!

'Tis The Season
Again.
Everyone, enjoy your families and friends. We'll be enjoying ours here in our household, by phone and via the internet. Merry Christmas and have a safe and happy New Year. Loving the changes being made, loving the retirement and loving the family, friends and our wonderful natural beauty out here in this great Pacific Northwest. Hardly a week goes by where I don't spend hours wandering the forests, just taking in the sights, smells and sounds of everything around me.
A little bit earlier in the year. Just one of those little country creeks.
A fun road...

A remote creek...
And an east to west creek's drainage.
Life's good when you can get out and enjoy it! Even when you're 64! Merry Christmas everyone! Have a Safe and Happy New Year!!! Enjoy!

I'm back on the blog.
I just thought I'd be posting back on this blog. I've been posting elsewhere but wanted to dust this one off again for craps and giggles. The other one's a bit too "political" I guess. Facebook didn't like me, twice.
So, I thought I'd come back here and throw some pictures up that I took when I was sitting in my old office.

Found it! The blog... Life.
It's been awhile since I've been on here. Well over a year. I'm retired now. I've been retired since 10/2014. All's going as well as can be.
For some reason I thought this blog was removed. Today, while culling out old emails I came across one that was sent to my main account from another email account I had way back in the late 90's early 2000's. Miraculously I remembered my password to the account. First try, I got logged on! Dayum! Anyways, here I am.
Being as I have time on my hands I'm going to try to dust some things off around here and update the ol' blog.
Or not. It depends how it goes. I did succumb to the draw of Facebook... TWICE! The wife got the first timeline I set up so I set up another one. Actually two other one's but Farcebook doesn't like right winged slants and pseudonyms on the same timeline. They're okay with it if it's all a liberal thing though. Nevertheless, it is what it is. It's Zueckerman's, Zueckerborg's (whatever his friggin' name is) little treasure trove. I can't fault him for demanding that when we're in his sandbox we play by his rules. It just didn't sit well with me the way he and his ilk arbitrarily locked me out of my pseudonym timeline and refused to let me back in it so I could mine the several years of information I put into it. But again, it's his rules not mine.
On the other hand this old place is still around. I'm thankful for that. I was running out of things to do, being retired and all. Too little time, too much to do now.
Well, thanks for being here. I'll be dropping by from time to time. Don't be shy, feel free to comment. Just keep in mind I'm machiavellian as all get out when it comes to my blog. I'll put Zueckerman, Zueckerborg, whatever to shame.
Take care!

RETIRED!
Kinda...
I thought I'd dust this place off a bit being as I have some idle time to spend.
For those two or three of you who happen to know me and stumble across this blog... well, I'm retired after roughly 42 yrs. of public service, 39 of it in the "Law Enforcement/Puzzle Solving" industry. I retired at 0001 hrs. today, the first day of October, 2014. It's an odd, bittersweet feeling.
Being as I'm done with public service I'm now going to dabble in the private sector for about five or ten years just to keep moving and keep my mind clear... Besides, the extra money will help us here at our house live with most of the creature comforts we currently have given all of the changes made over the past several years to our economy. But that might be another post some day soon.
Either way since June 9, 1972 my life up to this point has been a helluva learning experience. I've been blessed with the best family one could ever hope to have, true friends, an endless list of memories, experiences, events and an overall a great life!
Now it's time to move forward.
For those in the industry... there is a light at the end of that tunnel. Keep moving towards it but don't focus on it... you have to make it there to get there. So far, it's not that bad (but then again this is only 10 hrs. into my first day of the rest of my life).
Stay safe, learn from each other, teach each other, trust your instincts, trust your training, your judgment and by all means go home to your family when you're done for the day!
I'll be dropping by this site more often now that I have a bit more time to tinker!
Look out!

The passing of William E. Komula, Jr. 59 Yrs. old.
William (Billy) E. Komula, Jr., 59 died in a tragic auto accident on Monday night, March 10, 2014. He was a passenger in a 1994 Jeep Cherokee driven by Ryan Christopher Cughan, 36 yrs. old Lacey, Washington. Bill is survived by two sons (William and Andrew), a daughter in law (Georgina), one granddaughter (Lilly), two brothers (Mike and Steve), two sisters (Karol and Jackie), numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, several inlaws, outlaws and friends. There will be a memorial service in Arizona sometime this summer. Local services will be held in the Olympia area amongst family and Bill will be cremated and eventually transported to Globe Arizona in the early summer (2014) to his final resting place.
Ryan Christopher Cughan, the driver of the vehicle that Bill was a passenger in was arrested by Thurston County Sheriff's Deputies on March 11, 2014. Shortly after the Sheriff's Department was notified of Billy's death Cughan was charged with Vehicular Homicide, a felony. He's currently being held at the Thurston County Jail in Olympia, Washington.
If you knew Bill you know he lived life fast, hard and on the edge... Sometimes crossing over, most of the time hell bent for election. He had his fun, had his moments but he always wore his heart on his sleeve. You never had to guess what Bill thought... he'd tell you outright. Bill was well intended just not always so clear about his intentions.
On Monday night, March 10 up here on a little neighborhood community road in Washington State, Wild Bill Komula finally met his match. He's had a helluva crazy life and was struggling in the end but now it's over for him. For those of you who knew him you have your memories of him... good, bad, indifferent. If you knew Bill you know he was... well... memorable in a lot of ways. I'll leave that up to you to define your version of "memorable".
Life catches up with all of us eventually.
All I can say is this chapter's over. Bill, you fought your demons now rest in peace!
That's the best eulogy I can muster...
Here's the news of the wreck.
Your Brother in Law

It's been awhile...
It's been awhile since I've posted to this blog other than copy/pastes.
I thought I'd just drop a line and toss around some thoughts I have regarding life in general.
I'm still out there plugging along in the "puzzle solving" industry but there's definitely a different tone in the immediate workplace. I'm not complaining, just saying...what good would it do to complain anyways. Besides, I look at complaints as a distraction when working. I'll post to the blog or chat about things "after the fact" if I feel compelled to do so but I'm not keen to criticizing and complaining while working.
So, with that in mind I still get out and about quite a bit these days. Not as much as used to but hey, I still have some interesting times out there.
(About the pic... East of Yakima, WA. A homestead that saw better days.)
I'm a bit concerned about the way things are going around here, in this county, in this state, in this country, this world as we see it. We have definitely seen better days and I'm not seeing any real end in sight when it comes to even getting close to seeing them again.
Maybe it's just me but I can't help myself. As I write this the U-6 unemployment rate is at a solid 15%... up from 14.9% last month. The U-6 doesn't take into account those persons who've simply given up looking for work, have fallen off of the unemployment rosters or otherwise can't afford to go out and look for a job.
We have a very sour, very hostile, volatile political climate out "there"... the ugliest I've seen in my lifetime and I don't see it getting any better before November. All I can say is I hope and pray the right choices are made by the majority of the "registered, legal" living, voting citizens of this mighty fine nation.
I didn't want to get political on the blog here but I did. See there, want in one hand and crap in the other... I know which one will fill up first.
RE: Life. We're still living the dream day by day out here in the grand Pacific Northwest. We moved into our new home a year ago (July). We lost our 15+yrs. old Chihuahua (Rookie) to blindness, congestive heart failure and arthritis in June of 2011. Our other buddy, Chief... the miniature Schnauzer somehow got the animal version of AIDS and went from healthy to dead in a scant four months in December, 2011.
After over four years of constant, incessant, increasingly difficult life altering, near intolerable pain I got my back operated on in December, 2011 (Thank you! Dr. Chong Lee!!!) I now feel like a whole new man. We're far more health conscious around here and though we have our "fall off" moments we're reasonably maintaining our weight, combining other activities that keep us active and trying to enjoy life like we used to.
I mean, we're only human.
Okay, I just thought I'd drop a line and let you know we're still out here... just being a bit pre-occupied with life so the posts are few (very few) and far between.
Hopefully I'll find more time in the future to post more upbeat stuff.
Stay safe and take care!
Dennis

Charlie Reese's 545 people column
Charlie Reese’s Last Column in the Orlando Sentinel!
He has been a journalist for 49 years.
He is retiring and this is HIS LAST COLUMN.
Be sure to read the poem and the Tax List at the end.
This is about as clear and easy to understand as it can be. The article below is completely neutral, neither anti-republican or democrat. Charlie Reese, a retired reporter for the Orlando Sentinel, has hit the nail directly on the head, defining clearly who it is that in the final analysis must assume responsibility for the judgments made that impact each one of us every day. It's a short but good read. Worth the time. Worth remembering!
545 vs. 300,000,000 People
-By Charlie Reese
Politicians are the only people in the world who create problems and then campaign against them.
Have you ever wondered, if both the Democrats and the Republicans are against deficits, WHY do we have deficits?
Have you ever wondered, if all the politicians are against inflation and high taxes, WHY do we have inflation and high taxes?
You and I don't propose a federal budget. The President does.
You and I don't have the Constitutional authority to vote on appropriations. The House of Representatives does.
You and I don't write the tax code, Congress does.
You and I don't set fiscal policy, Congress does.
You and I don't control monetary policy, the Federal Reserve Bank does.
One hundred senators, 435 congressmen, one President, and nine Supreme Court justices equates to 545 human beings out of the 300 million are directly, legally, morally, and individually responsible for the domestic problems that plague this country.
I excluded the members of the Federal Reserve Board because that problem was created by the Congress. In 1913, Congress delegated its Constitutional duty to provide a sound currency to a federally chartered, but private, central bank.
I excluded all the special interests and lobbyists for a sound reason. They have no legal authority. They have no ability to coerce a senator, a congressman, or a President to do one cotton-picking thing. I don't care if they offer a politician $1 million dollars in cash. The politician has the power to accept or reject it. No matter what the lobbyist promises, it is the legislator's responsibility to determine how he votes.
Those 545 human beings spend much of their energy convincing you that what they did is not their fault. They cooperate in this common con regardless of party.
What separates a politician from a normal human being is an excessive amount of gall. No normal human being would have the gall of a Speaker, who stood up and criticized the President for creating deficits. The President can only propose a budget. He cannot force the Congress to accept it.
The Constitution, which is the supreme law of the land, gives sole responsibility to the House of Representatives for originating and approving appropriations and taxes. Who is the speaker of the House now? He is the leader of the majority party. He and fellow House members, not the President, can approve any budget they want. If the President vetoes it, they can pass it over his veto if they agree to.
It seems inconceivable to me that a nation of 300 million cannot replace 545 people who stand convicted -- by present facts -- of incompetence and irresponsibility. I can't think of a single domestic problem that is not traceable directly to those 545 people. When you fully grasp the plain truth that 545 people exercise the power of the federal government, then it must follow that what exists is what they want to exist.
If the tax code is unfair, it's because they want it unfair.
If the budget is in the red, it's because they want it in the red.
If the Army & Marines are in Iraq and Afghanistan it's because they want them in Iraq and Afghanistan ...
If they do not receive social security but are on an elite retirement plan not available to the people, it's because they want it that way.
There are no insoluble government problems.
Do not let these 545 people shift the blame to bureaucrats, whom they hire and whose jobs they can abolish; to lobbyists, whose gifts and advice they can reject; to regulators, to whom they give the power to regulate and from whom they can take this power. Above all, do not let them con you into the belief that there exists disembodied mystical forces like "the economy," "inflation," or "politics" that prevent them from doing what they take an oath to do.
Those 545 people, and they alone, are responsible.
They, and they alone, have the power.
They, and they alone, should be held accountable by the people who are their bosses. Provided the voters have the gumption to manage their own employees...
We should vote all of them out of office and clean up their mess!
What you do with this article now that you have read it... is up to you.
This might be funny if it weren't so true.
Be sure to read all the way to the end:
Tax his land,
Tax his bed,
Tax the table,
At which he's fed.
Tax his tractor,
Tax his mule,
Teach him taxes
Are the rule.
Tax his work,
Tax his pay,
He works for
peanuts anyway!
Tax his cow,
Tax his goat,
Tax his pants,
Tax his coat.
Tax his ties,
Tax his shirt,
Tax his work,
Tax his dirt.
Tax his tobacco,
Tax his drink,
Tax him if he
Tries to think.
Tax his cigars,
Tax his beers,
If he cries
Tax his tears.
Tax his car,
Tax his gas,
Find other ways
To tax his ass.
Tax all he has
Then let him know
That you won't be done
Till he has no dough.
When he screams and hollers;
Then tax him some more,
Tax him till
He's good and sore.
Then tax his coffin,
Tax his grave,
Tax the sod in
Which he's laid...
Put these words
Upon his tomb,
'Taxes drove me
to my doom...'
When he's gone,
Do not relax,
Its time to apply

STILL THINK THIS IS FUNNY?
Not one of these taxes existed 100 years ago, & our nation was the most prosperous in the world.
We had absolutely no national debt, had the largest middle class in the world, and Mom, if agreed, stayed home to raise the kids.
What in the heck happened? Can you spell 'politicians?'
I hope this goes around THE USA at least 545 times!!! YOU can help it get there!!!
GO AHEAD. . . BE AN AMERICAN!!!

Picked this up from an email...
I'm not sure who the author is...
To Those of Us
Born
1925 - 1970 :
TO ALL THE KIDS WHO SURVIVED THE 1930's, '40's, '50's, '60's and '70's!!
First, we survived being born to mothers who may have smoked and/or drank while they were
pregnant.
They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can and didn't get tested for diabetes. Then, after that trauma we were put to sleep on our tummies in baby cribs covered with bright colored lead-based paints. We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, locks on doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes we had baseball caps (not helmets) on our heads.
As infants and children we would ride in cars with no car seats, no booster seats, no seat belts, no air bags, bald tires and sometimes no brakes.. Riding in the back of a pick-up truck on a warm day was always a special treat.
We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle. We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and no one actually died from this.
We ate cupcakes, white bread, real butter and bacon. We drank Kool-Aid made with real white sugar and we weren't overweight.
WHY?
Because we were always outside playing...that's why!
We would leave home in the morning and play all day as long as we were back when the streetlights came on or when Dad would whistle. No one was able to reach us all day and we were OKAY.
We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride them down the hill
only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times we learned
to solve the problem..
We did not have Play Stations, Nintendo's and X-boxes. There were no video games, no 150 channels on cable, no video movies or DVDs, no surround-sound or CDs, no cell phones,
no personal computers, no Internet and no chat rooms.
WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!
We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from those accidents. We would get spankings with wooden spoons, switches, ping-pong paddles or just a bare hand and no one would call child services to report abuse.
We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt and the worms did not live in us forever.
We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays, made up games with sticks and tennis balls and although we were told it would happen- we did not put out very many eyes.
We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell or just walked in and talked to them.
Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment.
Imagine that!!
The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law!
These generations have produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever. The past 50 to 85 years have seen an explosion of innovation and new ideas..
We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility and we learned how to deal with it all.
If YOU are one of those born between 1925-1970 CONGRATULATIONS! You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids before the lawyers and the government regulated so much of our lives for our own good.
Kind of makes you want to run through the house with scissors, doesn't it ?

just thinking and looking...
(About the pic: This picture was taken by our son's mother in law of our son, me and Dad down along the South Sound in the Beach Crest area probably in 2006 or 2007. We don't have the original photo. This is a picture of that picture. Too bad. I'd love to have had the original.)I was just thinking and looking and wondering about things the other day. Out and about running around trying to catch up on some work related stuff and stumbled across those everyday sights that I've been taking for granted lately.
Nothing spectacular, just sights of things that have been "overlooked" over the past couple of years. It's too bad... they're important to me and I just let them slip by... kind of like this blog site...
(About this pic: Mt. Rainier. March 05, 2010. Taken from a hilltop in the Elbe/Mineral, Washington state area. One of the states several active volcanoes.)Simple things with simple meanings.
These are places we go to reconnect, to keep in touch, to share... why have I not kept up? Why is it that I can't seem to get recharged and get that good ol' spirit regenerated and going again?
I don't know but it's an odd feeling... this having not been here in so long. There've been times over the past year where I've contemplated deleting everything and forgetting about it... moving on. Knowing it's here seems to cause some personal angst... especially since I haven't "kept up", haven't posted anything worthwhile in "oh so long". Yet, it still tells a story... even the inactivity.
I've revisited this site from time to time over the past several months with the sole intention of either posting to it or deleting it altogether... one or the other... but not letting it hang out here... alone... gathering dust... tangled in the web.
That's just not right. There's too many memories here.
It's not fair to log those activities, memories, experiences we've all shared throughout our lives only to abandon them to the mindless, heartless vacuum of the web.
I should have kept up but I didn't! I mean, a post that consists of a copy and paste of an anonymous email... where's that coming from?! That was a rather useless post, eh?
That isn't "keeping up". That isn't worthy of the label "blog activity". That type of post prompts action, serious consideration as to what to do next.
...with this blog...
If I stay on that course this blog will become nothing more than a dump site for witty but anonymous emails and cartoons...
...which has nothing to do with my original intentions for being here.
So, I've got some thinking to do.
Just thought I'd share my thoughts... Have fun all!

ain't this so true!
I got this sent to me via email. It's supposed to be a copy of an actual letter that was sent by a frustrated U.S. citizen to the federal government. I have no idea who actually authored the letter but was told it's relating to his application for a passport.
I read it over, got a good laugh and then thought to myself "isn't this a pretty sad situation if it is real."
I have no reason to believe why it wouldn't be real. I know I've wrote some of the same type of responses to our government folks over the years out of total frustration. I just don't think I was quite as eloquent as this gentleman was...
There is some rather crass language in it so beware...
Here it is... enjoy!
Dear Mrs. Ms. or Sir:
I'm in the process of renewing my passport and still cannot believe this..
How is it that Radio Shack has my address and telephone number and knows that I bought a cable TV from them in 1987 (22 years ago), and yet, the Federal Government is still asking me where I was born and on what date.
For Christ sakes, do you guys do this by hand? Ever heard of computers? My birth date you have in my social security file. It's on EVERY income tax form I've filed for the past 30 years. It's on my Medicare health insurance card and my driver's license, It's on the last eight damn passports I've had, It's on every stupid customs declaration form I've had to fill out before being allowed off the plane for the last 30 years. And it's on all those census forms that we have to do at election times. Would somebody please take note, once and for all, that my mother's name is Maryanne, my father's name is Robert and I'm reasonably confident that neither name is likely to change between now and when I die. Between you an' me, I've had enough of this bureaucratic bullshit! You send the application to my house, then you ask me for my f______g address. What is going on? You must have a gang of bureaucratic Neanderthal morons working there! Look at my damn picture. Do I look like Bin Laden? And "No," I don't want to dig up Yasser Arafat, for shit sakes. I just want to go and park my ass on a sandy beach.
And would someone please tell me, why would you give a damn whether I plan on visiting a farm in the next 15 days? If I ever got the urge to do something weird to a chicken or a goat, believe you me, I'd sure as hell not want to tell anyone!
Well, I have to go now because I have to go to the other end of the city and get another f______ g copy of my birth certificate - to the tune of $100. Would it be so difficult to have all the services in the same area so I could get a new passport the same day? Nooooo, that would require planning and organization. And it would be too logical for the f_______g government.
You'd rather have us running all over the place like chickens with our heads cut off. Then, we have to find some asshole to confirm that it's really me on the damn picture - you know, the one where we're not allowed to smile. Hey, you know why we can't smile? We're totally pissed off!
Signed - An Irate Citizen.
P.S. Remember what I wrote about getting someone to confirm that the picture is me? Well, my family has been in the United States of America since 1776. I have served in the military for something over 35 years and have had security clearances up the yingyang. However, I have to get someone important to verify who I am - you know, someone like my doctor WHO WAS BORN AND RAISED IN INDIA ! And you assholes want to run our health care system?????
Betcha' he didn't get the passport...

what are you looking for anyway?
(About the pic: Wildland fire investigators searching for clues to the fire's cause. Putting the puzzle together. May 10, 2009. Washington State)The draw of the puzzle! The thrill of the search!
Information! Where to go, how to look for it, how to find it! What do you do with it once you've found it?
Why are you searching for it in the first place?
There's so many unanswered questions. Just looking at the blog's search results can lead to fantastic ideas, plots, themes.
Here's a breakdown regarding people's searches that brought them to this particular site...
I'm not sure what everyone was doing with this first one but here's the top search subject for the month of June, 2009. Folks must be curious about the Alford Plea... for whatever reasons.
-Overall Alford Plea related information. 63.63 percent
-Definition. 27.27 percent
-In Georgia? 9.09 percent
-In Massachusettes? 6.82 percent
-In Washington state? 6.82 percent
-In Colorado? 2.27 percent
-In general? 2.27 percent
-When do you use an alford plea? 2.27 percent
-Is an alford plea to help you or hurt you? 2.27 percent
-Sex offenders and alford pleas in georgia? 2.27 percent
-Dismissal of alford plea washington state? 2.27 percent
Then we had the second most popularly searched subject for June, 2009... Prednisone. Also known as Predesone, Predisone. Believed by me to have led to Dad's deterioration of health and subsequent death. We will never know for sure... just my suspicion.
-Prednisone. Also searched as predesone. 20.45 percent
-Predesone? 18.18 percent
-Super swollen arms following a rash? 2.27 percent
Followed by one of the all time favorites...
-Hobo Spiders? 9.10 percent

The fourth most searched subject in June 2009 that landed people on this particular blog is a newby to the top five.
-Devil's Club? 4.55 percent
-Devil's club plant WA state? 2.27 percent
-Devil's club Olympic Peninsula? 2.27 percent
And finally, the fifth most popular search subject...
-Livingston Boat information? 2.27 percent
-Steering console for Livingston boat? 2.27 percent
I can only hope people found what they were looking for. The subjects are pretty diverse. But then again, the visitors to this site are coming here from just about everywhere on the globe.
Although the traffic has slowed considerably over the years it's still interesting to see who's visiting and from where they're visiting. I also try to determine what exactly they're looking for. There were a couple of rather absurd and bizarre searches but I've decided I'll save their information for another days post.
Bottom line! Thanks for stopping by! I'm not going away but I'm sure not as active on here as I used to be. Who knows, perhaps that'll change and I'll get back to posting about the world, as we see it a bit more regularly than I've been recently.
Take care! Thanks again.
Enjoy life!

A trip East...
(About the pic: The Belt Mountains and the Missouri River between Cascade, MT and Great Falls. East of I-15. April 26, 2009. DEH)... to Montana.
To drop some personal effects of Dad's off to two of my brothers, to "clear the air" so to speak on some things, to find time to think, to think, to regroup.
...to try to get new, fresh, crisp views of what lies ahead in the future... good, bad and indifferent.
It was a trip that had to be made. If for no other reason then to simply make it!
I've regrouped over the past several weeks. I've stepped back and taken a look at things from different perspectives and have realized once again that life has so many variables to it.
So many challenges!Life's not meant to be fair as we know it. Life's meant to be real, memorable, educational and if all goes well... rewarding.
Life's meant to challenge, to test, to affect...
Such is life.
(About the pic: Two Bighorn Sheep engaged in one of life's challenges at the base of the Little Belt Mountains, and the Missouri River between Cascade, MT and Great Falls. East of I-15. April 26, 2009. DEH)
I'm not sure what I got out of the simple four day, whirlwind trip east to Montana but I do know I had a lot of time to reflect, think and review where I've been, where I'm at and what's the possibilities ahead.
It's an odd and almost out of body, surreal feeling.
There's a lot of "things" going on in this world, this country, this state, this family that can be and are influenced by things, happenings beyond our control.
(About the pic: If those walls could talk. An abandoned homestead by Cascade, MT. East of I-15. April 26, 2009. DEH)Sometimes life seems simpler without all of the amenities of today. Sometimes I find myself longing for memories of my past, those memories clouded by life as I know it now.
I long for the hot summer days in Thompson Place in the late 50's, Mud Lake, the Satellite Bubble Gum machine from "Pete and Gay's" diner...
I long for those things I left behind in my rush to get here! Those memories I buried, those friends I've lost, those experiences I've forgotten.
I guess I needed that little trip east.
If for nothing else but for a bit of "renewal"... realizing that in the end, some things will never change.
I rambled but it's my blog, my right. If you've read this far you must be really bored.
Take care and enjoy it while it's here. Each and every "it" you can.

Loyal Friends...
Well, my brother Dan and sister in law Carol went out the other day and got themselves a fantastic little addition to their family. The pup's a beauty. A bit of lab and a bit of, well.... either way, she's already latched onto Dan and Carol like there's no tomorrow.
I got some pics in an email today from them that evidently were taken while they took a little trip with her out on Ft. Lewis, looking for some grouse.
She has a great look to her... confident, inquisitive, charming, playful and even a bit of mischief thrown in. That'd probably be the puppy in her.I'm not positive about all of this but the little bit of time I got to spend with the pup two nights ago shortly after they bought her impressed me.
She's a pretty pup... healthy and doesn't take no garb from the old grouch (Rookie... my Chihuahua) and Chief (my Miniature Schnauzer).
Chief's still a pup himself. Rookie's up in years... double digits and grumpy as heck. They stopped by to show the wife, nephew and I their new friend. And with a face like that even Rookie melted a little bit.
Anyway, Dan and Carol got themselves a great find I think. You need to go to the sellers blog to read the whole story... just scroll down the left column until you find this big, redhaired, bearded guy and his wife holding a little red puppy. It's a pretty neat story.
Here's a couple more pics. Now, aside from the labrador retriever part just what did they get?
It's, it's, it's a...
...VizslaFrom Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Vizsla (pronounced [ˈviʒlɒ], approximately VEEZH-luh), is a dog breed originating in Hungary. The Hungarian or Magyar Vizsla represents one of the best in sporting dogs and loyal companions and has a strong claim to being one of the smallest of the all-round pointer-retriever breeds. The Vizsla's size is one of the breed's most attractive characteristics and through the centuries he has held a unique position for a sporting dog -- that of household companion and family dog.
The Vizsla is a natural hunter endowed with a good nose and an above average trainability. Although they are lively, gentle mannered, demonstrably affectionate and sensitive, they are also fearless and possessed of a well-developed protective instinct.
Enjoy!!!

The time has passed...
There are times when you have to take a step back in life and take one of those deep breaths. To clear your mind, to remember things "back when".
Remember before the memories fade forever.
I was bumping along at work the other day and got a hankering to wander out to a little cattail, lillypad filled lake Dad and Mom used to take us boys to back in the late 1950's and 1960's. It was in the middle of the forest on Ft. Lewis, Washington.
It was an active little lake. Complete with picnic tables, a small boat launch and limited parking areas.
There was enough room for about six families to recreate comfortably. Every time we went to the lake we found an empty table so the public pressure wasn't all that overwhelming on the small site.
Life was simple... had more meaning back then.
Or so it seemed.
Our entertainment, our fun was self generated. Family style! We'd fish together, we'd play together, we'd hide together.
We'd explore everything, everywhere!
Our expeditionary base camp would be one of the several picnic tables on site. Our parents were our supreme commanders. The expeditionary leaders. At least one brother would be in charge of wood collection while the rest of us boys would repair and clean the fire pit.
People respected these types of sites back then. Rarely did you find remnants of a "campfire" with burned cans, rubbish, eggshells, etc. in them. Most of the time the sites were left in better shape than when they were found.
Things have changed.
The biggest thing I ever hooked while fishing I hooked off of this downed tree. I'll never forget it.I kept playing with a fish just below the limbs off of the left side. I'd walked out onto the tree's trunk, flipped my Mepps into the water past the limbs and reeled it towards me.
Every other cast I'd get a bump from a lunker. It'd come out from the shadows of the tree, hit the spinner and before I could set the hook it'd flip back into the shadows.
It was testing me.
I thought I'd trick it. I switched to nightcrawler and decided I'd cast past the limbs, out into the lake a bit more and reel through the fish's strike zone. That'd draw the fish out, he'd hit that nightcrawler and, realizing it's real food would take the bait! Hook, line and sinker!
Great plan! Wonderful plan! It'd work! It had to work!
A foolproof plan of attack for that lunker. I'd be dragging in the biggest fish of the day in a matter of minutes. Simple as that!
Nothing could go wrong. Nothing!
Except...
One of my four brothers had worked his way out onto the downed tree behind me. I wasn't paying attention. I was focused on the fish, my plan, the future...
As he moved out onto the tree I reared back to cast. My hook with worm went back over my shoulder. My eyes fixed on the water in front of me... on the site where I was about to cast. As I brought my cast forward I felt a tug... a snag of sorts. Without looking I pulled again to free the hook, bait. The snag fought back. The bushes behind me weren't forgiving. They held onto my hook and bait.In fact, the bushes behind me were screaming. Screaming at me to "stop!"
I turned to look at these talking bushes, to see what was happening. About the time I turned I saw my brother charging down the tree towards me, his right hand holding his neck, his left hand his fishing pole.
His face was distorted... anger, pain, surprise!
I recognized that look. I'd seen it several times before.
He wanted to hurt me.
I jumped off of the tree into the water... fishing pole in hand.
He followed me... his fishing pole in hand.
About the time I got to the shore from the lake Dad reached it from the bank. He pulled me out of the water then Dan, my brother... who was still screaming at me.
The baby!
Dad pulled my barbed hook from Dan's neck. The nightcrawler had long since fallen off into the water.
We were done fishing for the day. We headed back to the "camp" to stand by the fire and get dry, poles in hand and Dad between us... keeping the peace.
Once back at the picnic table Dan lost his anger. We laughed about the incident. Dad laughed the longest, loudest.
All I know is that I hooked the biggest living thing ever hooked by anyone in our family at Cat Lake. It was at the cost of living under a life long threat of retaliation though.
Dan, he makes sure he fishes "up front" now... and he's real wary when I cast.
I have no doubt that lunker got my worm that day.
I'll bet he's still there, bigger than ever!
...but things just ain't the same anymore.

Points to ponder...
